What’s Your Entrepreneurial Responsibility?
What must YOU do in order to deserve you place on the planet and your success, prosperity, security, and wealth?
A LOT of people think your purpose, your responsibility in life is to provide jobs.
You see that reflected in communities that are busily trying to pass laws, and in some cases suing companies, to keep them from moving or closing, because their responsibility is to provide jobs to the community.
Is it your responsibility to provide jobs?
I hope you don’t think so!!

If providing jobs makes your business successful, thats terrific! But if operating the business with fewer employees makes it more profitable, then it is your sworn responsibility as leader to operate it with fewer employees!
A lot of people think its your responsibility to pay taxes!
Personally, I’d be a LOT happier with my tax bill if the tax department sent me pictures of the welfare recipients – like when you send money to the starving orphan organization and you get as photograph and a letter once in a while about hoe they’re doing.
I think every tax payer should get some of those and have people assigned to them.
So for your money, you’ve got a picture of these 4 welfare recipients, and this retired guy, and you can put all the people you’re supporting up on the refrigerator.

And they should all have to write you notes once in a while to let you know how they’re doing!
I’d feel better. Wouldn’t you?
You have a legal responsibility to pay the MINIMUM taxes required of you!

It’s your sworn responsibility to do so!
Is it your responsibility to improve your customer’s lives?
NO, it is not!
Now, its pretty smart to sell them things that, if they use them as intended, will improve their lives.
That’s smart!
But its not your responsibility to see that it gets done!
Nor should you lose sleep over your customers who do not use what you sell them to improve their lives!

The entrepreneur’s responsibility is this:
Maximum profit and wealth to his shareholders!
If you’re the sole shareholder, that’s you!
Then your responsibility is to just play fair and not lie, cheat, or steal!
Integrity for the entrepreneur is optimizing sales, profits, and value in the business he leads!
Juts as the boxer who pulls punches in the championship fight lacks integrity, just as the quarterback who does not thoroughly prepare for the Super Bowl game lacks integrity, and just as the doctor who operates with a hangover lacks integrity

The business owner who pulls punches also lacks integrity!

GREAT post Duane! Integrity is critical to success in every field of endeavor.

Hi Duane,
another great post! and as usual, I love the incorporation of cartoons to illustrate your points.
I particularly like the points about how our customers have to do THEIR work, too!

I’m totally with April on the point that your customers or clients have to do their own work too. I frequently have clients who just don’t do the few things they need to do that they payed me to teach them in the first place. I do however try to find ways to help them overcome that when possible. Some people just don’t do the work which is tantamount with won’t do the work. We can only do so much and the rest is up to them.

Hi Duane,
And that’s why Kevin Hogan designs his courses based on MASSIVE actions from his students who’re also flooded with lots of info & instructions.
Results are in the doing even though a bit of thinking does help.
