Any Fool Can Make Soap! It Takes Genius To Sell It!

murphy1

Jerry Murphy was born in 1918, just passed away in April of this year.

He created his product from a German family recipe in 1905, in a little shop in The Flats, in Cleveland, Ohio.

If your not familiar with it, your mother and your grandmother are, and there’s probably a jar of Murphy’s Oil Soap under their kitchen counter’s.

In 1991, he and his family sold the soap’s brand and formula to Colgate-Palmolive for $100-Million!

This is the sort of person who built the entire world economy, and the sort of person who will rescue it once again, if it is to be rescued!

That man or woman who comes up with or finds a worthy idea, invests in it, figures out how to market it, and builds up a business around it!

Who gets up every morning and goes to work!

First to arrive at the office, store, shop or factory, often the last to leave.

When one such person gets a $100-Million check handed to him, he earned every penny by doing all the things the overwhelming majority of people just won’t do!

Not CAN’T do! Won’t do!

After all, this Big Thing was ‘just’ soap in a jar.

Brown, gunky, oily soap!

So how could soap in a jar with the unimaginative name and plain-jane label be such a Big Thing for Jerry, a $100-Million Thing, and endure in the marketplace all these years?

Well it’s a good product that works so well people told and tell others to get it!

But truth is, the product couldn’t have been Jerry’s Big Thing.

Jerry’s Big thing had to be Jerry!

His willingness to work hard at it and not give up and put together money he likely didn’t come by easily to risk on TV commercials, his initiative and self-reliance, his building of relationships.

Success really isn’t all that complicated.

Nor is it beyond just about anybody’s reach.

If they’d reach!!

    Duane,

    Great story and moral lesson!

Many years ago, I attneded a Leadership Course while I was with IBM Australia, what hit me most was the 2 words: “Willing ” and “Able”.

Most are “able” but not “willing”. Hard to find those who are “willing” but not “able” to do things.
