It’s Warmer In The Winners Circle!

April 4, 2007.
Cleveland Indians’ home opener, when hope ever so briefly pokes its head out of its hole for Tribe fans.
And it snows! Actually the day started with pouring rain, dropping temperatures, sleet and, by the time of the game, it was right around freezing, but with driving rain, sleet, snow mix.
Exposed skin stung.
But if you win as I can attest, its at least 20 degrees warmer with a glint of sunlight in the winners circle
If you aren’t winning, cold is colder!

It may surprise you to hear that there are large numbers of people, including business people, who do NOT play to win.
It may further surprise you to discover you may be one of them!
They get up and go to work in their businesses each day for a long laundry list of bad reasons.
They do it because they have to.
Because the mall says their store must open by 10.00 AM.
Because they are in debt.
Because its what they do.
And at the end of each day without any clear measurement of how they did! They either do not keep score at all or they only keep one score, a trailing indicator, sales.
You see I set out to win in sales, average sales per customer, life time value of a customer, referrals per client etc
I obsess over the details!
The plane flight home is way more comfortable when you win!
See, most people are NOT obsessed with winning every game they play every time they play.
The successful people that I know are!

We can debate this from a mental health standpoint, but I can tell you it is a fact!
The business day is a collection of contests within a contest, so that all day long at different times and points they know if they’re winning or losing, they can make little trips to the winners circle, they can tally scores.
Winning reinforces winning!
So they consciously or unconsciously set up a series of wins to build on one another.
The other difference is that we take it ALL personally!
An ordinary business owner with four stores of some kind may say store#3 isn’t performing well.
The successful person would say to self and others:
I’M not getting store #3 to perform as planned.
Outcomes are very different for those who deny personal responsibility and those who take it!

You can hear this in the way a person describes himself, his business, his life.
By the way any moron can claim the first position regarding the under-performing store.
If you happen to have any high-priced talent thinking, talking or acting like this, fire them immediately and replace them with the cheapest to pay dunce you can find.
The results will be the same and you’ll pay less for them!
The only person worth having around is the one who takes the second position.
One other thing.
The winners circle is NOT democratic, it never will be!
It has no interest in giving everyone a turn!!

I was thinking about this the other day.
We don’t always play to win all the time. And I think the reason we don’t is nearly always due to a lack of confidence. We’re often scared to play to win because success can be uncomfortable for us.
Hmm… I’m not sure about that, actually. I think fear of failure comes in there too. And fear of letting ourselves down.
There’s probably a post here, once I’ve done some thinking…
I enjoy your posts. They always make me think…

I like to win but have a hard time admitting that sometimes. As I deepen my understanding and wake up more, I see that there is room for it all. I value succeeding, so best to allow and admit it. The only time there isn’t room is when I’m setting one thing apart from another and looking at fragments.

Duane,
Sometimes, ALL can win in the same game as the total slice (market) is often much bigger than we thought.

Very strong points about the mindset of winners. I found myself comparing my attitudes and thought processes to those of winners that you listed. Great post, as is customary with you!

Your posts are always thought-provoking – especially your quotes. I loved this one today. “Obsessed – just a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated.” So true!

Yes it is always glowingly warmer in the sun shine of the winner’s circle.
